Assessing irrigation performance with comparative indicators: The case of the Alto Rio Lerma Irrigation District, Mexico AgEcon
Kloezen, Wim H.; Garces-Restrepo, Carlos.
Describes and evaluates the application of IWMI's minimum set of performance indicators to the Alto Rio Lerma Irrigation District, and compares this with the application of a small set of process performance indicators.

NON-AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVES IN THE UNITED STATES: ROLES, DIFFICULTIES, AND PROSPECTS AgEcon
Bhuyan, Sanjib; Leistritz, F. Larry; Cobia, David W..
A wide variety of cooperatives outside the agricultural sector have been playing an important role in the nation's rural and urban areas by providing housing for the elderly and poor, affordable health care, child care, and education. These firms may constitute both business models that reduce the cost of operating a business and effective community development models that forge cooperation among local government and communities. However, limited information is available about how these non-agricultural cooperatives operate, how they were formed, or what are their problems or difficulties as non-traditional cooperatives. This study of 162 randomly selected non-agricultural cooperatives across the United States attempts to answer these questions and...

Rheological behavior of Chlorella sp. e Scenedesmus sp. cultures in different biomass concentrations REA
Santos,Michel de O. dos; Martins,Márcio A; Coimbra,Jane S. dos R.; Gates,Richard S.; Corrêdo,Lucas de P..
Studies involving the use of microalgae are increasingly intensifying for the potential they present to produce biofuels, because they are a renewable energy source that does not compete directly with food production, and because they enable the obtaining of a fuel with less environmental impact when compared to fossil fuel. In this context, the use of microalgae is directly associated to its capacity to be produced on a large scale and to be extracted from the culture medium. Rheological studies are important for obtaining the information needed in the elaboration of projects and equipment that will be used in various operations existing in systems of production and extraction of algal biomass. In the evaluation of different levels of dry biomass...

Temporal variation in fish community in the tailrace at Três Marias Hydroelectric Dam, São Francisco River, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Loures,Raquel Coelho; Pompeu,Paulo Santos.
Damming rivers to generate hydroelectric energy causes a series of changes in the environment, including impacts on the ichthyofauna. Knowledge of the fish community immediately downstream from a hydroelectric dam can help to reduce the negative effects of dam operation, such as fish entrance into the draft tube during turbines maintenance. We evaluated the temporal variation in fish community composition and abundance, near Três Marias Hydroelectric Dam (TMD), and its relationship with abiotic variables. Samples (n = 18) were carried out using gill nets in the tailrace of the dam, over the course of a hydrological year, at six time points during a 24-hour period. Abiotic data were also sampled to assess the relationship with the biotic data. In the...
